AM I TOO OLD TO LEARN GUITAR?
AM I TOO OLD TO LEARN
GUITAR? Asking for a friend
The short answer to
this question is – No. You are never too old to learn guitar. You can
start to learn any instrument at any age. As long as you do not
have any underlying conditions that physically prevent you fretting the
instrument, there should not be a problem. While younger people may learn quicker,
you are still capable of learning guitar as a beginner whether you
are 20 or 70.
Your age has
nothing to do with learning guitar, it's that simple.
The Golden Rules
Practice for half an
hour a day rather than fitting a week’s practice into one day.
Progress at your own
speed – this allows you to concentrate on concepts that are more challenging
and move quickly through areas you find easier. Focus on the progress you are
making, rather than the problem areas. Next day, next week and next year will
come around. Keep practicing, it will come!!
Remind yourself why
you want to learn
Learn something new
eg. A new song, scale, arpeggios
Keep a practice
schedule. You can print these off the internet.
There is a chain of
thought that says that musicians get better with age. Certain starts like Bill
Withers or Debbie Harry, never even had a hit until they were over the age of
30. Other stars that are still touring well into their mature years are the
likes of Paul McCartney, Paul Simon (maybe it’s the name!). Tony Bennett was in
his 80’s and still performing with the likes of Lady Gaga.
Charles Bradley
According to infogram the largest percentage of
students who play guitar are under 20 years of age. The next largest percentage
are over 50’s (less than half the under 20’s group!)
